The 29-year-old ended 17 seconds ahead of Denmark's Tour de France winner Vingegaard with Slovenia's Giro d'Italia winner Roglic one minute and eight seconds behind in third place. There was a celebratory mood amongst the Dutch team on the 101km 21st stage that concluded on a street circuit around the landmarks of Madrid. But the battle for the stage victory was a high-octane thriller as a small lead group featuring Groves and Remco Evenepoel was caught by the peloton in the final 500m. While Kuss celebrated the overall victory, Groves secured the green jersey for the points category -- the first Australian to achieve that in the Vuelta. When Kuss took the red jersey from Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ) on stage eight, most thought he was just keeping it warm for either Vingegaard or Roglic.

Sept 15 (Reuters) - Alberto Dainese of Team DSM-Firmenich narrowly avoided a massive crash in the final kilometre to sprint to victory in stage 19 of the Vuelta a Espana on Friday while American Sepp Kuss of Jumbo-Visma finished safely in the peloton to retain the overall lead. Filippo Ganna was in the ideal position at the front and opened up the final sprint but Dainese timed his sprint to perfection to edge out his fellow Italian by milliseconds. Dainese said the victory was special as he is leaving the team for Tudor Pro Cycling next term. "Today I felt a lot of pressure because I knew it was the last opportunity for a sprint. Kuss, two stages away from winning his first Grand Tour, was all smiles as he retained the red jersey.

For Ineos Grenadiers road powerhouse Ganna, twice the road time trial world champion, it was consolation after Olympic champions Italy lost in the final of the team pursuit to Denmark on Saturday. "Thanks to Dan for an amazing battle in this velodrome," the 27-year-old Ganna said after claiming his seventh track world title, six of them coming in the 4km individual pursuit. Aerodynamics guru Bigham was part of Britain's gold medal-winning team pursuit squad at last year's track worlds and is eyeing next year's Olympics in Paris. He worked with the Denmark team pursuit squad that won the 2020 world title in Berlin in a then world record time. The pair shared a warm embrace after the race with Bigham saying they had a 'mutual respect' for each other's skills.

GLASGOW, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Denmark reclaimed their world title in men's team pursuit as they defeated Olympic champions Italy in the final at the UCI World Championships in Glasgow on Saturday. In a repeat of the gold-medal battle at the Tokyo Games in 2021 which Italy won in a world record time, Denmark exacted revenge as they reeled in the Azzuri to win comfortably. Denmark also won the title in 2020 and were favourites going into the Olympics. In the women's team pursuit final later, Britain -- led by local favourite Katie Archibald -- take on New Zealand, seeking to win the title for the first time since 2014. Austria's Valentina Holl won the women's title.

Aug 1 (Reuters) - The first edition of the combined UCI Cycling World Championships begins in Glasgow on Thursday with 11 days of high-octane action across virtually every discipline. Archibald, whose first ventures in track cycling were at the Glasgow velodrome, will be part of a British track team looking to flex their muscles ahead of the Paris Olympics. Britain were only fifth in the medals table at last year's track world championships in Paris with three golds -- the men's team pursuit, men's omnium and women's points race. Track world championships ahead of an Olympic Games can be cagey meetings, with the big nations sometimes reluctant to play their hands -- although the British team will be airing their cutting-edge Hope-Lotus track bike. Other events at the world championships include indoor cycling and a full para road and track programme.

Her mother plans a visit to see her in Swan Lake at the end of March, which gives her emotional strength. Though the Hungarian State Opera has hired her for another year and she is happy with her new opportunity, Muromtseva would naturally like to return home one day. "I am waiting for this day, that one day I can dance on Kyiv stage again, but for now I have a contract here."

March 18 (Reuters) - Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel won the Milan-Sanremo on Saturday to claim the first Monument of the season, 62 years after his grandfather won the race. However, Van der Poel launched his attack on the summit of the Poggio with 5.5km to go and stormed into the lead, extending it as they entered the city with the other three riders fighting it out for second place. The victory was Van der Poel's third after winning the Tour of Flanders in 2020 and 2022, following in the footsteps of his French grandfather Raymond Poulidor who won the race in 1961. It's one Monument every rider wants to win one day," Van der Poel said with a smile. Milan-Sanremo is the longest Monument race at 294 kilometres this year.
